Netizens outraged over Malaysian bank’s domestic helper insurance ad

Thought that Hong Kong textbook was racist?

Malaysia’s Hong Leong Bank has produced an advertisement for the Hong Kong market which features a clumsy domestic worker in ‘darker face’ and a curly wig. This advert’s purpose is to sell domestic helper insurance but unfortunately, the ad does seem to reflect Hong Kong attitudes towards domestic helpers. There are over 300,000 maids all over in Hongkong, who mainly hail from the Philippines and Indonesia, supposed to be perfect market for this advert.

Here’s the video of Hong Leong’s advertising for domestic helper insurance:

This video commercial also has drawn outrage on social media in Hong Kong, with groups representing the city’s legions of domestic helpers calling for an apology.

Hong Leong did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but the bank appeared to have removed the link to the advertisement from its website on Wednesday.
