Gold Coast, Australia – A stingray on the Gold Coast becomes aggressive on a swimmer and charges towards it, as it to provoked the creature firsthand.
On a video captured going viral over the internet, the man was seen first swimming near a large stingray on the clear waters at Broadwater on Gold Coast. Unpredictably, the man suddenly decided to dive towards the creature, provoking it. The creature swam frighteningly away from the man, who in turn walks back to the shore.
Seconds later, the stingray turned and started sneaking up behind the man, still unaware. Someone off camera intently shouted to warn him prompting the guy to dive away in fear as the stingray charged at him.
Both the man and the stingray seemed to be unharmed after the incident.
The one- to two-meter stingray which is present in the video might be an estuary ray, which is a common specie in the area.
27 year old Gavin Ball, a Southport local who labors at a nearby café where the incident took place, said that stingrays are very common in the area.
‘If you’re out on the pier, you see them every day,’ he says on a report.
Ball said that most of the common stingrays are of smaller variety, at about 45 to 50 cm in span. But, he eventually said that there are still larger estuary rays that roam around, but someone would have to be an ‘idiot’ to intentionally provoke them.
