Meet Mohammad Kaleem. An 8-year-old boy from India who was born with twice the size of a baby’s hands. According to a local doctor, his medical condition is very rare. He also said that the cause is unknown but it could be either lymphangioma or hamartoma. Lymphangioma is condition that targets the lympathic system, causing severe swelling in certain body parts while hamartoma is a benign tumor where one’s body produces extra tissue.
Today, each weigh around 8 kgs. That’s bigger than the boy’s head!
Sizing up to 13 inches from the end of the middle finger to the base of his palm, he finds it hard to dress and feed himself.
Poor little Kaleem was often bullied in school because of his condition. “I do not go to school because the teacher says other kids are scared of my hands,” he says in an interview. He also added that some of the students in their school has already beaten him.
Kaleem’s family has been struggling to make ends meet. With only £15 monthly salary that his father earns, sometimes his mother would beg for money to keep up with their needs.
When asked if he is willing to undergo operation, he said, “I don’t know if I want doctors to operate on my hands. They would have to make me unconscious and then they would cut me open. I have no problem if they could do it without an injection. A small operation would be okay.”
According to the Dr Krishan Chugh, head of pediatrics at the state-of-the-art Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, Kaleem’s condition can be treated. This gave hope to his parents to strive harder in order to get him treated.
“We have tried several places with no solutions so far. But I have a feeling there is a way to get the resources to give my son a normal life,” his father said.
