China – For a week, Cui Guanghu, a photographer, followed a group of beggars in Zhengzhou, Central China’s Henan province.
According to Cui, this group has around 10 members in which they beg on public places in shifts.
Dressed in rags, one of them is seen lying on the ground looking very ill, while another asks for alms from passersby. Hours later, the “ill” person got up and walked towards a restaurant for a hearty meal.
After a luxurious dinner, they count their money and divide it for themselves.
These beggars will have different partners the next day and perform a different heartbreaking scenario to ask people for money.
Cui said these people can make up to 2,000 yuan ($410) per day. That’s huge compared to a regular employee’s daily wage.
In a photo collage created by Cui, it shows a family of beggars having breakfast at a fastfood restaurant. For lunch, they get to enjoy beef and beer meal. A watermelon and popsicles for tea, and a deluxe dinner at a five-star hotel.
Based on reports, the members of this group include an old beggar who monthly sends his family 10,000 RMB ($1,600).
It was revealed that these professional beggars can earn more than 10,000 yuan a month, hold real-estate certificates and entry permits for Macau and Hong Kong.
Li Qiang, a professor in sociology at Qinghua University, said many beggars who are physically capable of working do not want to get a real job as they can earn more from begging.
