A lot of people have lost their phones or had them stolen – never to be returned again. So, we could, somewhat, understand the feelings of one lady in Davao who left her mobile phone in the cab [take note: she left it or it fell].
Now, the cab’s next passenger, Maria Irene Aserios, allegedly witnessed the entire exchange between the honest taxi driver and the, hmmm, negligent previous passenger.
Maria called the incident the ‘Taray Davao Taxi Driver Incident’ but I think Manong taxi driver did the right thing. Here’s why.
Taray Taxi Driver Incident
According to Maria, she boarded a taxi somewhere in Davao, bound for the airport. The previous passenger had left her mobile phone in the cab.
The phone rings…She handed it to the driver and told him to answer it, which he did.
The honest driver told the previous passenger that he will return the phone, but the lady has to wait because he still has a passenger he needs to drop off at the airport. He ended the call.
Ten seconds later…the phone rang again.
The driver told the phone owner that he will return the phone to Robinson’s because that was where he had apparently dropped off the previous passenger. He ended the call.
Five seconds later…the phone rang again.
Now visibly irked, the driver did not pick up the phone but simply continued to drive.
The phone rang for a hundred times – alright, that’s an exaggeration, but the continued ringing clearly angered the driver who really planned to return the phone but had a passenger he needs to bring to the airport.
The Epic Answer
Already at the end of his patience over the persistently irritating phone owner/previous passenger, the driver finally picked up the phone again. His answer was epic (excerpt from Maria’s FB post):
Madam, Davao taxi drivers are honest. When I said I will return it, I will. Just don’t pester me right now because I have a passenger and I don’t want to look unprofessional. Besides, I don’t need your MyPhone. I have an iPhone given to me by my son, who is a seaman, and another phone from GrabTaxi!
We can’t verify whether the taxi driver really had an iPhone – but who cares? He clearly put the lady in her place; though he did appear ‘mataray’ during the exchange but I would probably do the same thing.
The good news in all this, despite the ‘taray mode’ of the taxi driver, is that he really was honest and willing to return the phone to its rightful owner.

Here goes the grammar police Mr. Kaiser & Macky who, I presume both write and speak English with perfection. I hope you are earning well. Fyi, my English is crooked that I cannot even express my thoughts in that language, same thing with other Filipinos I am working with, maybe if you guys hear us talking in English you might suggest that we go back to Eng 101, I don’t even know the subject verb agreement, syntax, blah blah! to hell with that, but I can talk and corresponds with my British and American counterparts with confidence. And most importantly, we are earning quiet a lot of money, modesty aside. I have a friend who took his masters in English in UP, he speaks and writes with fluency and he always looks at our grammatical errors and flaws, pero baon sya sa utang sa GSIS. Just my 2 cents

It is very true that taxi drivers in Davao are honest, that is if they are really from Davao. It’s different if the driver is from Manila and working in Davao. The same thing could be said about taxi drivers in Cebu.
Please.. Don’t go into that “Davaoeños are like.. We’re like this..”

How honest are Davaoeños? Ask your Davao death squad and the “malicious” YouTube vids going around sometime now. Framing up criminals by planting evidences? Wow. What difference does it make?

Fell down is actually used correctly in the article. Fell away and fell out would be inappropriate because the phone didn’t “fell out or away” of the taxi.
As for consistency, your barking at the wrong tree. I believe the write wrote the way it is for accuracy and attention to details.

“Fell away?”….”it were”?….fell down or fell off is fine to use in this article, bad wolf is right coz it hasn’t been out or away from the taxi…and must be “it was” coz it’s singular…
Anyway, we’re not perfect, even the native English speakers are sometimes grammatically wrong..so before you criticise others, make sure that you are always perfect 🙂

What is very important ba of this wrong grammar and correct grammar in the english language of yours. Are you americans? You are brown with ilong na pango so dont critisize other people. It’s a good story. The passenger was untrusting and impatient. She probably thinks that the driver is a superhero that can be in two places in an instant. Taxi drivers are no superheroes. They just drive. I heard from my relatives that Davao is one of the safest places to live. I think that would be great for tourism. For those who are so obsessive and compulsive about grammar, please be patient with us who are not well inclined with proper English. Some people make mistakes. When you comment, please be constructive rather than belittling others. You may gain friends that way.
