Fourteen years ago, reports surfaced alleging international singer Mariah Carey calling Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez a “brown monkey” during an interview with then MTV Vj Donita Rose.
According to rumours which initially circulated in Singapore, Donita Rose asked the superstar to comment about the Filipina singer. Reportedly, Mariah said: “A brown monkey who can sing!”
Interestingly, Regine’s singing and fashion style undeniably mirrors that of Mariah. A reason why many Filipinos tend to compare the two divas.
Mariah: A Victim of Racial Prejudice
In Ricky Lo’s column published on May 2000, the writer discussed why he didn’t believe Mariah said such derogatory comment about Regine.
In December 1999, Lo interviewed Mariah in Hong Kong during the launching of her album Rainbow. During the interview, Mariah, whose mother is of White -Irish descent and father who is of African-American-Venezuelan descent, revealed she was a victim of racial prejudice. According to Mariah, her maternal family disowned her mother because of her marriage to Mariah’s father.
Moreover, during her early years, the pop diva experienced racial slur in New York. Mariah disclosed she had been spat on by a white person when she was younger, as reported by Yahoo Movies in 2013.
Donita’s Statement
Meanwhile, the then MTV host Donita Rose said her piece shortly after the issue came out. In her statement, the model-host denied the interview took place.
“The said article claims that international superstar Mariah Carey made a derogatory remark when asked to comment on our own Regine Velasquez during an interview I supposedly conducted for MTV Asia. This alleged interview never took place except in the fertile minds of people who have not bothered to check their facts and made me an unwitting party to a distressing situation.”
She added:”Not having been present during the said ‘interview’, I have no comments to make on what was or was not said by Ms. Carey,”
Regine Velasquez Speaks up
Regine then broke her silence in one of the episodes of Bare All with Boy Abunda.
“Parang weird naman na magcocomment siya nun eh hindi naman niya ako kilala. Sino naman ako para suddenly mapansin ni Mariah. Alam ko namang walang katotohanan yun otherwise nakita ko myself on TV.”
The Filipina diva emphasised she had no reason to believe such rumours since no interview with Mariah Carey saying such statement was ever produced.
“Even if she did say that, it would still be a compliment for me, ” she stressed.
This is super old news, why bring it up?
Di nasagot ang tanong sa title.
nasagot kaya! magbasa ng maigi ok?
It is because Mariah Carey will be having a concert in manila in october 2014. pampaingay lang:)
THE REAL REASON why this article still lives it is because of the many Filipinos who still believe on it. They brought it up to make clarity that Mariah NEVER EVER did said anything like that to Regine and every human should know the truth!
