Singaporean Travel Blogger Under Fire for Plagiarism

Travel blogger Derek Low is in hot water for lifting some lines from other people’s work and using it in his blog entry about his $23,000 flight from Singapore to New York via Singapore Airlines’ luxury Suites class.

The creator of Berkeley Ridiculously Automated Dorm (BRAD) has been called out by netizens for plagiarising the work of other bloggers. In his controversial blog entry entitled “What It’s like to Fly the $23,000 Singapore Airlines Suites Class” , Low detailed his luxurious trip which featured full-size beds, Salvatore Ferragamo amenity kit, Bose headphones, Blue Mountain gourmet coffee,  and “Book the Cook” service. His piece became viral.

However, Reddit users took notice of the ripped off work on October 1, after user infinitus_ shared Low’s story.

In the social network, user stainless13 commented: “This guy stole my content and writing for his article (including the thumbnail, which is a boarding sign in Frankfurt Airport, not Singapore like he implies). I have no doubt he actually flew on the flight, but his plagiarism is infuriating.”

Serial Plagiarizer?

Since then, Low has been accused of copying comments and photos from other writer’s blog and putting it together to create his story.

User stainless13 also known as Andy Luten, owner of Andy’s Travel blog, claimed Low copied three of his posts.

In his entry dated May 2013, Luten wrote about his first class travel experience from Hong Kong to San Francisco via Cathay Pacific Airlines.

“I found the check-in areas for Cathay Pacific and made my way towards a regular desk, where I was promptly greeted by an attendant, ‘Good morning, how can I help you sir?’  I had a sudden mental lightbulb and said ‘HI, OOPS, SORRY, NO YOU CAN’T HELP ME’ and business manishly walked away, leaving a bewildered attendant.”

Meanwhile, Low wrote:

”As I joined the line for check-in, I was promptly greeted by a staff. ‘Good evening sir, how may I help you?’ A sudden realisation hit me and I went ‘OH NOPE SORRY’ and briskly walked away, leaving the lady astonished.”

Some of the lines written by Gatsby’s Green Light writer Rebecca were also copied by Low.

In her blog entry about her travel from London to Singapore using Singapore Airlines Suites class, Rebecca wrote: “Interestingly enough, my suitcases were not even weighed. I suppose when you fly Suites, you can pack a suitcase with lead bars and get away with it.”

Low wrote almost the same comment in his blog: “Interestingly enough, my suitcases were not even weighed. I suppose when you fly Suites, you can pack a luggage filled with rocks and get away with it.”

Low has already removed some of his plagiarised content from his blog.
