Dr Ajoy Roychoudhary was appalled to discover 202 teeth inside the mouth of a 7-year-old girl who earlier complained of severe pain and swelling of her mouth.
“It was shocking to see such complex situation in the minor’s mouth,” the chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at New Delhi Medical Institute said.
The unnamed girl was brought to the dentist after she informed her mother about her mishap.
The Xray results revealed that she was suffering from a condition called compound odontoma. People with this condition have a complex benign tumour made up of normal dental tissues that developed irregularly.
As for the treatment, the girl underwent a two-hour surgery in order to get rid of the extra teeth and tissue.
“Normally we see a few abnormal teeth-like structures in such patients; 202 of them inside the mouth of a seven-year-old is shocking, and our prime task was to get rid of it,” Dr Roychoudhary explained.
Dr. Ongkila Bhutia, one of the girl’s doctors, described the procedure as “difficult” and “delicate” since any mistake may result to facial deformity.
“We used a special bone-cutting instrument to remove the tumor in this case,” he said.
It turned out that the surgery was a success as the girl can now chew soft food and is currently recovering. Because of the procedure, the girl can now live a normal life.
One of the girl’s relatives said that the surgery is the best birthday gift for the girl.
“The surgery was conducted a day after her birthday. She cut the cake at the hospital only and celebrated it with her parents and doctors.”
