Australia – A seven-day-old baby boy still wrapped in a hospital blanket was rescued at the bottom of a 9-feet deep pipe covered with a 440-lb concrete slab.
David Otte along with his 18-year-old daughter Hayley was cycling along the road when they heard a strange noise coming from a drain.
The man thought it was only a kitten but when they went down there, they could hear exactly what it was. “You could definitely tell it was a baby screaming,” he said.
They immediately called for help. It took six men, including three police officers, to lift the slab before they can rescue the baby.
According to reports, the little tot has been there for almost five days. It seemed that the little baby had been pushed through a small opening to the storm drain.
At that time, the temperature has been over 100 degrees farenheit.
“How could someone do it? I, myself, have kids and we’re expecting a baby in a few more months so it’s not good that someone’s going through this and has done this to a little one,” says Mark McAlister, New South Wales Senior Constable.
The infant is now in Westmead Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
David, Haley, and her mom, Michelle, went to the hospital to give three sets of baby clothes, a new baby blanket and a face washer and towel for the baby.
David said they wanted to see the child but the hospital declined at the moment because of his condition.
“We’d all really love a chance to see him again. Today has been such an emotional experience for everyone,” says David.
Michelle explained why their family gave the little boy gifts, saying, “ he really doesn’t have anything… We have family, we have each other. He didn’t have anything.”
Meanwhile, a woman was charged with the attempted murder of the child on November 23. She was refused bail and will appear on court the next day.
“New South Wales police will allege in court that the baby was abandoned in the drain since Tuesday,” reports the Daily Mirror
The New South Wales Police Spokesman said the concrete formed a layer of insulation which kept the baby from the bad weather. The temperature in Sydney fluctuated this week. It was 20+ degrees Celsius and then up to 40 today so it wasn’t 40 degrees Celsius every day this week.We haven’t seen anything like this before.”
