A 24-year-old lab technician from Malaysia has recently discovered she is biologically male.
This year, Mary discovered she was born with a rare condition called Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome or AIS after consulting Dr. Christopher Chong, a gynaecologist at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore. Those with this condition displayed almost all physical traits of a female but are biologically male. In addition, they are resistant to male hormones.
Growing up with three brothers, Mary admitted she was “a bit of a tomboy”. Instead of dolls, Mary preferred reading comic books particularly those with violence on it.
Unlike other girls in her class, Mary did not have her menstruation at 13 but this didn’t bother her.
“I did not get my period when I turned 13, but I wasn’t anxious. I was told some girls get theirs much later.”
At 17, Mary still did not have her period so her parents brought her to a doctor in Malaysia who prescribed hormone pills. However, the pills didn’t change her situation.
Not bothered by her state, Mary concentrated in her studies when she was in college. In addition, she felt embarrassed to share the matter to anyone.
The Shocking Discovery
In July this year, Mary sought the help of Dr. Chong.
In his interview with the The New Paper, Chong said: “Mary looked completely female with small breasts and a normal looking vagina.”
To find out what was wrong with Mary, the doctor did an ultrasound scan of her pelvis. Through the examination, Chong discovered Mary doesn’t have ovaries and womb.
Chong then conducted a blood test for karyotype which revealed that Mary is genetically male.
After the shocking discovery, Mary underwent a surgery to remove undescended testes found in her abdomen and inginual region. Chong explained that undescended testes may cause cancer.
Moving On
According to Mary, her parents had helped her move on from the painful experience.
“Instead of grieving over something that cannot be changed, they focused on making arrangements with the hospital for my surgery.”
As a result, Mary allowed herself to be upset for just one week and moved on from the experience.
Currently single, Mary intends to be honest with the man she will be dating in the future only if he is trustworthy.
