The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is in hot water after the Senate Intelligence Committee released a 500-page executive summary of a report detailing the torture tactics done by the agency to the 9/11 terror suspects on Tuesday.
According to the report, the CIA executed interrogation tactics far more brutal than what was widely known. Moreover, the Committee concluded that the action undertaken by the agency was ineffective in making the US safer following the September 11 attacks.
Among the savage techniques employed by the agency were ice baths, sleep deprivation for weeks, water boarding which is a simulated drowning method, medically unnecessary techniques, physical and sexual abuse of the detainees’ family members, confinement to small spaces, and death threats.
One of the detainees was fed using a medical method called rectal infusion.
Majid Khan’s ‘lunch tray’ consisting of hummus, pasta, with sauce, nuts and raisins was ‘pureed’ and rectally infused.
Due to the savage conditions of the CIA secret facilities, one terror suspect identified as Gul Rahman died of hypothermia.
The report also revealed that five detainees were wrongly held due to bad intelligence.
CIA Torture Tactics: Inconsistent with American Values
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama said the torture tactic executed by the agency were contrary to the values of American people.
The US President said in a statement:
It reinforces my long-held view that these harsh methods were not only inconsistent with our values as nation, they did not serve our broader counterterrorism efforts or our national security interests.
John Brennan, the agency’s director came to the defense of the CIA saying that their techniques facilitated the capture of the terrorists and saved the lives of people from future attacks.
