The photo-sharing site Instagram got rid of millions of inactive, spam and fake accounts on Friday, December 19. With over 300 million Instagrammers, the social networking site is on a mission to keep things real in your network.
The site’s statement read:
“While this may seem good news for Instagram users who want authentic connections, the site’s move was a big blow to local and international celebrities who lost thousands to millions of followers in a matter of hours.”
Case in point Canadian singing sensation Justin Bieber who lost 3.5 million unreal Beliebers and reality TV superstar Kim Kardashian who lost 1.3 million fake followers.
Based on the list of software developer Zach Allia, the top ten “losers” on #Instapurge include the accounts of Instagram itself, Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Kendal Jenner, Taylor Swift, Khloe Kardashian, and Kylie Jenner.
Local celebrities weren’t spared by #InstagramRapture. In fact, model-actress Sam Pinto actually lost 4,000 followers in just 3 hours.
Pinto posted her rant about the sudden drop in her Instagram account’s number of followers on Twitter on Thursday, December 18. As of writing, Pinto now has 489,000 followers.
