The family of Tugce Albayrak , a woman from Turkey who was left in coma after being beaten by a baseball bat, has decided to switch off her life support.
On November 15, Albayrak suffered the mishap after helping two teenage girls she heard crying for help from the bathroom of a fast-food restaurant in Frankfurt, Germany. The 22-year-old woman arbitrated a group of men who were distressing the girls.
Unfortunately, one of the men from the group hit Albayrak’s with a baseball bat while she was in the parking lot of the restaurant. The trauma caused Albayrak to fall into coma.
After doctors announced Albayrak was already brain dead, her family decided to pull off the plug on her 23rd birthday.
Many people from Germany, including President Joachim Gauck are recognising Albayrak as a hero.
In fact, more than 50,000 people have signed the online petition for President Gauck to give her a National Order of Merit award.
Many even wore shirts with Albayrak’s picture with words “Seni seviyoruz” (We love you) below it.
“She will always remain a role model to us, our entire country mourns with you. Where other people looked the other way, Tugce showed exemplary courage and moral fortitude,” wrote President Gauck in a letter to Albayrak’s parents.
An 18-year-old man identified as Sanel M. is currently being held in custody in connection with the crime.
German police are asking witnesses to emerge including the two teenage girls Albayrak helped.
