Who’s to Blame? Taxi Driver Without Change vs Ateneo Student Video Goes Viral

A video of a heated argument between a taxi driver who didn’t have change and an Ateneo student with a P500-bill is the latest trending topic on social media.

With over 300,000 views, 10,000 shares and almost 10,000 likes on Facebook, the video posted by Ateneo student Mark Buraga has quickly gone viral.

On Saturday, December 6, Buraga rode a “Red Angelo” taxi on his way to Ateneo de Manila University to take his final exam. Their argument started when Buraga informed the taxi driver that he only had a P500-bill for his fare.

Since he had no change for the bill, the irate driver insisted that the Ateneo graduate student should have informed him earlier about it. On the other hand, Buraga pointed out that the taxi driver should have been prepared for it.

 Here is Buraga’s narration of the incident:

I was late for my Final Exam in Ateneo because of this guy from RED ANGELO taxi. I’ve been calling the company but no one is answering.

He didn’t have change for my 500 so we had to go to the nearest gas station (petron jupiter) to break my 500. In Petron he took his fare and didn’t take me back to Ateneo, he left me there.

Kindly share, I want to make sure that the only thing he’ll be driving for the rest of his life is a pedicab. I want his license suspended.

  1. In my opinion, the point of argument by the student is valid. It is proper that any public transportation should have anticipated that there is a probability that their customer would pay cash of higher value so in return, the driver can provide a change in excess of the amount that should have been paid.

    On the other hand, the argument made by the driver is non sense since as a customer it is enough for us that we have the money to pay that is really due regardless of the our available cash. It is then the driver’s obligation to return any change to the customers in excess of the amount due against the cash paid.

    As to whom should be blame, I think the driver here is at fault for the following reasons:

    1. Arrogance and rudeness- considering the situation, I think the driver should be apologetic because he has no available cash in exchange for the Php 500.00 bill. But his attitude has been too rude to the point that he is calling “GAGO” the passenger.
    2. Considering that the passenger is humble and considerate, to the point that they went to the nearest gasoline station to have the bill change, I think the driver as a courtesy, should have bring the passenger back from the suppossedly destination. But in this case, the driver did was left the passenger from the gasoline station after getting from the passenger the amount of the metered fare. In addition, the metered from from the original destination to the gasoline station, for me should not be billed by the driver but in the argument, the passenger is obliged to pay for said additional metered fare.

    • Mr. BLOOMBERG1980. I partially disagree with your opinion.

      It is true that it was improper for the driver to be profane. However, we cannot completely rely on that as the student was provoking him. As a student of Ateneo, which I graduated from, we are taught to be “men for others”; To have a more mature understanding of the situtation. It is also true that it was unprofessional to leave the student at the gas station. However, I think that it was the better (not good) move for the driver as he might have done something that would make the situation worse for him. He was being intentionally provoked by the student and being put into video hoping to catch some gruesome act.

      As for your argument, we cannot expect taxi drivers to have change all the time. Remember that this type of business is not like a convenience store that will always have change for whatever amount. They have to meet their daily boundaries, pay the gas they used up and, luckily, have something to take home to their family. How would you expect one to have spare change the next day?

  2. If you’ve been riding a cab like I have for most of the time.
    You’ll know for sure that it’s common courtesy to ask if the driver has change for a large bill ergo the student’s 500.
    We should all be aware that maybe. JUST MAYBE. The driver just got out and started his day with nothing but a couple of hundreds in his pocket.
    The driver got pissed with the student that’s why he left him there.
    And that’s where he went wrong.
    And for the love of God.
    Do we really need to make this viral?
    Do we even need to post this on social media? Lol.

    • Both have their faults. There are still instances to think before judging on the side of the student.
      1. Before taking a cab make sure you have smaller bills or inform the driver that you have the bigger amount so he can break it earlier.
      2. You have your point, the driver can take you back where you wanted only if you didn’t argue that much
      3. On the contrary, what if he was the first passenger of the taxi?

      1. It is right that you should have your wallet ready for a change.
      2. You shouldn’t say bad words. that made it worst.

    • korek, dahil atenista siya ganun na lang kung kumuha ng video… simasadyan niyang maging magalang kasi no-rerecord niya ang pangyayari… para lumabas na siya ang mabuti at ang driver ang walang modo… alam kung maypagkakamali din yung driver dahil inasal niya. pero mali din yung atenista dahil hindi siya naghanda nang small bills para pambayad. inerecord niya at ipinost pa para magmukang kawa at laitin ang ang driver sa social media. @#%#%^%^@@#$#.

    1. Fault mo na sumakay ka sa isang pampasaherong sasakyan na WALA kang barya.
    – before ka umalis ng iyong tahanan better to check ur wallet
    – kung nagawa mo ung pagcheck sa wallet mo’ tiyak nagawa mo mapapalitan sa ibang pede mapalitan yung pera mo.
    – kung wala ka napalitan, maaaring nagawa mo sana na nung pagpara mo sa taxi bago ka sumakay naisip mo sana itanong “Manong 500 po pera ko e, may panukli ka po ba?” YAN ANG UNANG MAIISIP NG TAONG MAY PINAG ARALAN.

    2. Karapatang pantao ang nasagasaan mo habang vinivideo mo ung pag uusap pag aargue niyo ni manong

    • Sorry po, di po fault ng passenger na wala siyang barya, alamin mo muna karapatan ng mga pasahero. Di ba “customer is always right”. Sa mga fast food ba pag nagbayad ka ng buo, sasabihan ka ng GAGO? Ang punto dito, kung pareho silang walang barya, pwede yang pag usapan ng mahinahon, nakita mo ba yung ASAL nung driver?? Yun ang mali dito, malumanay magsalita yung pasahero, yung driver lang ang maangas.

  8. Not the responsibility of passenger to ask. And i ride taxis a lot but never had to ask if they have change for big bills. Driver didn’t handle it well.. But i get how this video could possibly ruin someoe’s life unnecessarily..

  9. Both parties may be at fault pero marami pang modus ang mga taxi driver na for sure lahat tayo naka experience na. Dapat lang maging viral yan. Daming taxi driver ginagawang palusot ang walang panukli kahit hundreds lang ang ibayad mo. Kahit 70 or 180 ang patak ng metro mo at magbayad ka ng 100 or 200 respectively, ginagawa na nila palusot ang walang panukli para mapilitan ka na ibigay sa kanila yung buo. Kapag naman naghanap ka pa ng barya kahit nasa destination na papatak yung metro mo hanggat di ka nagbabayad. Ginagawa nila yan lalo kapag nakabihis, mukhang nagmamadali, or mukhang hindi sanay sumakay ng taxi ang pasahero nila. Dapat sinususpinde yung mga ganyan.

  14. My two cents…I agree that the driver was rude and he was wrong for that but I can’t say for sure what happened prior to the scene we saw. The guy who took the video obviously remained calm because he knew everything was being recorded.

    As a commuter myself, I know the protocols when it comes to paying fares especially during early mornings. I think the statement “Dapat handa kayo” is plainly stupid. Regardless if it’s jeepney or taxi, try to pay with exact fare or if not with smaller bills during early mornings. Or if you don’t have smaller bills let your driver know ahead of time (or pay earlier for jeepneys) so they can prepare for it before you go down or find some place to have it changed.

    Alam nating lahat madalas sa umaga WALA pa kita mga drivers kaya wala pa sila panukli…kaya nga sumikat ang linyang BARYA LANG PO SA UMAGA diba?

Simple lang naman ang solusyon, dapat may COMMON COURTESY on both sides…kung alam ng driver na wala pa syang panukli dahil kalalabas lang nya or kung puro buo din ang pera nya, then he should have informed the passenger na kung buo ang pera ng passenger ay wala syang maipanunukli. Dahil idi nya maiiwasan na walang barya o buo din ang pera ng pasahero. This is just being pro-active on the driver’s part.
    At sa pasahero naman, if he knows (take note the keyword “if he knows”) na wala syang barya, it won’t hurt na sabihan din nya yung driver bago pa sya sumakay. I understand na minsan di mo rin maalala kung may barya ka nga o wala sa wallet mo (which I assume is the case dito sa passenger). All of these can be prevented if there is common courtesy or respect on both sides. IBut in the video, i don’t understand why would the driver will resort to cursing. I applaud the passenger (student) dahil di na nya pinatulan yung driver by keeping his argument in a mellow tone.
    I recommend na para maiwasan ‘tong mga ganitong sitwasyon going forward, dapat may mga sign (or even make it a rule) na the cab driver can not accept a bill na P500 na buo or larger kung ang metro eh less than P400. Parang dito sa ilang establishment dito sa US na may naka-paskil na sign na “We do not Accept bills larger than $20” if you’ re buying something na less than that amount. Just saying!

  26. Just to share my own experience. Nag tataxi lang ako pag talagang walang ibang transportation na dumadaan sa area or I’m in a hurry. If the student is honest that he’s rushing for his exams, then, who are we to blame him for not being able to prepare smaller bills? He is in a rush and pre-occupied with his exams.

    We cannot fully argue that it is his responsibility to prepare lower bills because he is the customer. I’ve rode other taxis na walang change so before I take a seat, the drivers automatically tells me he doesn’t have change just so I know. Kaya I have the chance to get another cab if I don’t have lower bills to pay them.

    Upon trying to weigh both sides, kung naging magalang ang student na ito dahil lang naka record sya, irregardless of that, rude parin ang driver to say the words “gago” and even talk to someone else and say that repetitively. Kung totoo man na fake yung pagka galang ng student, it doesn’t change the fact that the driver was very rude and his behavior is very unacceptable.

    Sa mga ibang nag cocomment, yes we have the right to say our opinions but let’s not drag the school name. Wag na natin sabihin pa na porke Ateneo ganito, ganyan. I’m not from Ateneo for the record but I don’t think it should be dragged to this issue.

    The main issue here is the behavior of the driver towards a customer who didn’t have a change.

    I believe it is not the fault of the driver na walang syang panukli. It is the fault of his company or management for not ensuring that he has money for that. But I honestly think that the student not having lower bills will never be a good reason for the driver’s attitude.
