These Fooled Pinoys On Facebook: Top Ten Facebook Hoaxes of 2014

According to Asian Correspondent, the Philippines ranks first among the number of signed up users on Facebook. That’s actually 93.9% of the country! Now, if every signed up Pinoy would always check their account and believe everything posted, that means 9 out of every 10 Filipino Facebook users would have been fooled at one time or another. So we came up with a list of the Top Ten Hoaxes that actually made news on Facebook. Read on and see if any of them actually fooled you…

Let’s start the countdown:

10. Piolo as a National Symbol

Of course, everybody knows who Piolo is, but to file a bill to make him a “National Ultimate Hearthrob”? Well, yeah, Pinoys fell for it!

Ebola Virus infects 18 Filipinos in Quezon City? A lot of Pinoys actually feared for their life on this, that even the Department Of Health (DOH) made an official statement about it. Did you ever believe this hoax?

Who wouldn’t believe this news? With the caption that says, “After losing to spurs this morning(Manila Time), Miami heat bashers went berserk on LeBron’s twitter. And the “KING” replied with a really “BURNING” tweet.” on Philippine Trend, this is just as good as it gets!

7. Bossing vs Vice Ganda

With the all-out ratings war between the two leading noontime shows, even Facebook users fell for this “video” which actually didn’t show Vic Sotto cussing Vice Ganda. It’s a good thing Vice Ganda clarified it. Whew!

6. Flesh-eating disease as “prophecied” by Prophet Sadhu Sundar Selvaraj

The perfect hoax combination: a prophet with a weird name on a news shown on ABS-CBN. Who wouldn’t share it on Facebook? And who wouldn’t be fooled? Talk about responsible media, ABS-CBN apologized after DOH disproved it.

5. Pearl Harbor to be relocated in Manila

Who wouldn’t be thrilled to have the Pearl Harbor in Manila? Only the U.S., I guess…

4. Korina, unwelcome in Japan

It’s like Korina Sanchez hadn’t done enough. Right after the netizens bashed her for wishing ill for Japan, a satirical news about the “teary-eyed” Prime Minister Abe went viral all over Facebook.

3. Post this on your status…

A copy of what is supposed to reclaim the rights to any images, videos or words the user uploaded to Facebook was posted in several statuses not just in the Philippines, but even around the world. However, no matter what you post on your status, it won’t actually help you, especially that Facebook doesn’t own any copyright of what you post on your account. Did you ever post this on your timeline?

2. Facebook Fees

If this news was ever true, Mark Zuckerberg would have made a fortune from us Pinoys, at $2.99 per month, students contemplated on including this amount in their budget.

1. Death by Facebook

Who hasn’t died on Facebook? It wasn’t just Filipino personalities who have died this year on Facebook, even Hollywood celebrities have been a victim of this hoax. Among those who made the list of “dead people” are Vic Sotto, Billy Crawford, Freddie Aguilar and Claudine Baretto, and in Hollywood:  Jackie Chan (who even posted a picture saying he is alive), Justin Bieber, Will Smith, and Betty White, just to name a few. Just recently as well, as the Voice Philippines have just began airing again, one of its coaches, Bamboo Manalac “died” because of drug overdose. Poor Guy.

Well, that’s what makes up our list. Which did you actually fall for? Leave a comment below.
