Cebu Pacific Air faces P52 million charge

Manila– It will cost millions for Cebu Pacific Air (CPA) to pay for the flight cancellations and delays during the Chirstmas holidays, this was made clear by Civil Aeronautics Board.

Cebu Pacific has to pay for P52 million fine according to the final decision made by the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAAP), Civil Aviation Authority (CAB), and the Manila International Airport Authority.

The penalty has reached the certain amount as it was based on the number of affected passengers which reached more than 10,000, said by CAAP. For every affected passenger, they need to settle P5,000 fine.

“Cebu Pacific was fined P52 million. That was based on the 10,400 passengers that were affected by delays and cancellations on December 24, 25, and 26,” CAB director Jose Victor Luciano said.

There’s still time for the country’s second fag carrier to appeal for motion of reconsideration.

“Regarding the reported fine imposed on CEB, we have yet to receive an official communication from CAB. Until then, we cannot give any comment,” CPA VP for corporate affairs Jorenz Tañada said.

Not only the airline will face charges in paying for the money but the CAB issued also a strong reprimand them to maintain appropriate service standards for its staff.

CAB executive director Carmelo Arcilla made it clear that the fine is based on a finding by the board that Cebu Pacific’s operational lapses and passenger mishandling constitutes a breach of the basic condition of its CPCN (Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity), i.e. to provide proper, suitable, convenient, safe, adequate and reliable air transportation services.

Irate customers complained against the said budget carrier due to delays and cancellations from December 24 to 26. This provoked the government panel to investigate the matter.

20 cancelled flights and 288 delayed flights at NAIA terminal 3 were found in the reports submitted by the Cebu Pacific to the panel board.

“What is clear from the panel’s initial report is that Cebu Pacific had an appalling number of delayed flights from December 24 to 26. Cebu Pacific is blaming air traffic congestion, but this does not appear to be supported by the facts,” Transportation Secretary Jun Abaya had earlier said.

Bad weather was the cause of cancellations and delayed flights on December 25, this was according to the said airline. This made many passengers to move out on the following day and high level of absenteeism of check-in personnel was also reported. Another cited reason of CPA was the cramped space favored long queues, as five international carriers has recently based their operations at the terminal.
