Have you ever withdrawn cash from a bank and got double the amount of what you’re supposed to have? Granting that no one knows yet that a bank teller mistakenly counted the cash given to you, are you honest enough to return the excess amount? A policeman in General Santos City luckily experienced that and was unbelievably honest to call the bank about the incident.
Our local policemen aren’t known to be icons of greatness and honesty. We all have our own shares of stories of cops behaving against their role in the society. So knowing that good cops really do exist is quite amusing.
Inspector Rafael Banggay Jr. is currently assigned in Central Mindanao police’s community relations office. According to a report published in Inquirer.net, he went to a bank to encash a check amounting to P100,000. A teller then handed him two bundles of cash – one is of P1,000 and the other of P500 bills.
In the story shared online, Banggay didn’t count his money before heading out of the bank. He went to a gasoline station after to fill up his vehicle where he eventually found out that he was handed P200,000 – twice the amount of his check.
He immediately called a relative working in the bank upon reporting to his office. Later that day, he returned the extra P100,000 cash he got earlier.
“I am assigned with the PNP-12 police community relations officer, I should serve as model,” he said.
Asked why he returned the excess money, Banggay said “What is not mine will never be mine, I believe honesty begets honesty.”
Our Philippine National Police (PNP) should train and hire more of Banggay to restore their image. If only that’s possible, right?
