Film Director Slammed for Criticizing Pope Francis’ PH Visit

After posting a controversial comment regarding Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines, a Filipino Indie film director is being lambasted all over social media.

According to PH Access, film director Ejay Yan shared his negative sentiments on Pope Francis’ statement “focus on Jesus, not me” on his Facebook account.

In his statement, Yan pointed out that the pontiff’s visit has interrupted payroll schedules, caused traffic jam brought about by closed roads, and had the government spending too much for his security.

As of writing, Yan’s post has been taken down, while his account has been deactivated. Some netizens were able to take a screen shot of his complete remark.

PH Access mentioned that Yan is a director for FILmo Media productions.

Catholics, Non-Catholics React

With the Philippines being a predominantly Catholic country, many members of the Pope’s congregation have expressed their reactions on Yan’s criticism of the pontiff.

“The Film Director may be forgetting of the mix of politics and religion. Pope’s comment is obviously should not be taken literally.The Pope may have observed that so many big figures welcomed him and even public officials who could not leave his side. The Pope is here not because he just wants to be here…but he needs to, the Vatican needs him to be here. Many international people are visiting our country to inspect their donations, performances and etc. due to popular corruption…so Catholic bashers – not all Catholics are blind followers…but at least the Pope is better than any popular figures in the land.”

Non-Catholics also said their piece about the issue.

“I am not Catholic either but I respect the Pope and his mission…And when he said FOCUS ON JESUS AND NOT ON ME, he is stating the truth. It just so happened that the people in the countries he goes to make it a big event. Christians will do the same if Bill Graham goes to their country. Maybe not as big as the Catholics’, but it will be celebrated. You need to give respect and honor to the leaders of each sect. It’s a very important rule as a human being.”

One user stressed that Yan did have a point but directed his sentiments on the wrong person. According to the user, the government is the real culprit in the problem raised by Yan.

“His sentiments are well in good faith, but apparently not directed towards the real culprit here. It’s on the government for dramatising too much on the papal visit – holidays, towering cover-ups of slum communities, closed roads, etc – not exactly on the pope itself, and surely not how he would want it to be.”

    Did faithful Jews of Bible times venerate images?

    The veneration of images is consistently condemned in the Hebrew Scriptures, commonly known as the Old Testament

    A COMMON CLAIM

     According to the New Catholic Encyclopedia, the Jews had an abundance of images associated with their worship “and these representations were honored, reverenced, and venerated.” * As examples, that encyclopedia cites the numerous engravings of fruits, flowers, and animals that adorned the temple in Jerusalem.—1 Kings 6:18; 7:36.

    WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

     Contrary to what the New Catholic Encyclopedia asserts, faithful Jews did not venerate any of the engravings or figures associated with the temple. In fact, nowhere in the Bible do we read of a faithful Israelite using an image for worship.

    Should images be used simply as an aid to worship?

    Veneration of images is a religious practice that has no support in the Bible. For that reason, Jehovah’s Witnesses do not venerate images, nor do they have religious images in their homes or in their places of worship

     “Since the worship given to an image reaches and terminates in the person represented,” says the New Catholic Encyclopedia, “the same type of worship due the person can be rendered to the image as representing the person.”

    WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

     When Jesus taught his followers how to pray, he did not tell them to use images. The very idea of using an image to worship the true God cannot be found in the Christian Greek Scriptures.

    WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS

     “It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.”—Matthew 4:10.

    • Your arguments become invalid when all the sources you’re attempting to “disprove” only come from ONE source. Do you know YOUR church organization’s history? You’re so quick to attack the Catholic Church for their beliefs and history when you only base your arguments ONLY on scripture. How much do you really know about the history of Christianity?
      ALSO, how do YOU know what pleases God? Since it’s obvious you seem to know for sure that veneration for the images we have of the Blessed Mother and of Jesus Christ does not please God. You must seem to know all there is to know about what God truly wants and feels.

    • Its not the Pope’s fault nor the Church about spending money for his security. The government offered it since there were rumors that rebels may attack the Pope during his visit. The government had funds for any visits; they are not actually using the people’s money but they’re spending the money from the allocated budget for this year. We should know how our money is being processed so that we will not make any comments.

    • Aside from being the head of a religious congregation, the Pope is also the Head of State of Vatican. It is the obligation of the host country Philippines to make sure that the visiting leader is safe in the duration of his stay in the country. It is a DIPLOMATIC COURTESY. The same security is also provided and extended to our president and our diplomats whenever they visit other countries. Don’t make a freaking fuss about it.

  95. Let’s settle the issue here. Kesyo nakialam ang gobyerno sa affair ng simbahan when there should be a separation of church and state, blah, blah,blah…
    The 1987 Constitution of the Philippines declares: The separation of Church and State shall be inviolable. (Article II, Section 6), and, No law shall be made respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

    Let us put aside the religious aspect. The Pope is NOT just a church leader. He is a Head of State of Vatican. It is our RESPONSIBILITY as the HOST country Philippines, to make sure that ANY visiting State leader is SAFE during their stay here in the country. Such courtesy is also given to our President and our diplomats whichever country they go to. So don’t make a fuss. The government is just doing its job in addressing this security nightmare.

    The Philippines is 80% Catholic. So expect more or less 80% of that 100million Filipinos to get all excited in meeting their church leader when given the chance. Other religious congregations have their head preacher, pastor within reach as most of them are based in the country. With the Catholics, it’s not everyday that their Pope pays them a personal visit. So a pandemonium is to be expected from the crowd. With this, government had to address the security nightmare.

    “The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference, shall forever be allowed. No religious test shall be required for the exercise of civil or political rights.” This is a Constitutional guarantee as provided for in (Article III, Section 5).

    The government gave leeway to other religious congregations when they celebrated their centennial year, or had a huge gathering to celebrate a milestone. The government also declared it a non-working holiday, closed a few roads and streets to reroute traffic in order accommodate the delegates and in a way, support their religious rites and activities.

    The government upheld the public’s welfare and safety. Not just for one person, but for everyone. Now, let us move on.
