Using a combination of plastic bags and a masking tape, a man attached 94 iPhones all over his body including his “chest, belly, thighs and shanks” in an attempt to smuggle the Apple smartphones from Hong Kong to Guangdong province in China.
According to a report by Sina News, the Hong Kong citizen attempted to smuggle 300, 000 yuan ($48,388) worth of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus phones while trying to cross the border between Hong Kong and mainland China on January 11. The police noticed the suspect walking in an awkward manner characterised by “weird walking posture, joint stiffness, and muscle tension”, reports The Verge.
The high-end smartphones have been seized at Futian Port and are currently being held by custom officials in China. Meanwhile, the suspect is under investigation.
The delayed launch of Apple’s latest iPhone in China back in September last year opened opportunities for smugglers, according to a report by Reuters.
“Many of those devices will be smuggled across the border into mainland China, where they could change hands for as much as four times the Hong Kong price.”
