MANILA, Philippines- With hundreds of thousands of Filipino Catholic devotees joining the annual procession of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, finding a vacant portalet is becoming a major problem for everyone joining the celebration.
This is why the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) thought of distributing adult diapers to 2,000 traffic enforcers on duty for the parade of the Black Nazarene on Friday, January 9.
So what was MMDA’s rationale behind their unique strategy?
According to MMDA chief Francis Tolentino, traffic enforcers don’t need to leave their posts by wearing adult diapers. Additionally, there is a shortage of portalets during the feast making it difficult for them to find one.
“Kasi kapag umalis ka sa pwesto mo at pumila ka sa portal, baka isang oras na hindi ka pa nakakabalik. Kung sabay sabay lahat ji-jingle wala ng tatao doon,” he added.
In Thailand, bus conductors are urged to wear adult diapers all day long at work because they don’t have enough toilet breaks.
The Thai workers’ poor working conditions has caused them to become ill. Several female bus conductors suffer from urinary tract infections, while others have developed stones in their kidneys. Some were even diagnosed of uterine cancer after years of wearing diapers at work.
Do you think this move by the MMDA is strategic or stupid?
