China – Two children were forced to live with the decaying body of their dead mom because they fear they will be scolded if they tell the authorities.
According to reports, 34-year-old mentally ill Deng Caiying of Guangdong Province died of malnutrition. Her health deteriorated after her husband’s death three years ago and she, along with her kids, was put by relatives to live in a ramshackle.
One neighbor said, “People did what they could for her but mental problems meant she couldn’t find work after the death of her husband and she was relying on handouts from relatives who are also poor.”
When Deng passed away, her two boys, Mo Xiaoyong, 12, and Lok Pan, 13, locked her body in a bedroom where she was eventually found by a mental health worker who regularly visits their home.
Hui Ying Chuang asked the boys where their mother was and they pointed at the bedroom door.
“I went in and realised immediately that she was dead. The smell was suffocating and when I asked what had happened the younger boy said they had locked her in after she died and hadn’t told anyone because they were afraid of being scolded,” Hui said.
She also described the kids as quite “numb but calm.”
A police spokesman said that the children are now receiving counseling, describing the incident as a “tragic death in tragic circumstances.”
