Mayor Nelson Gamaliel Garcia, the town mayor of Dumanjug, Cebu, wants dolphins, sharks and whales to be killed. According to a report by The Freeman, the mayor made the shocking proposal during Tanon Strait Protected Seascape Stakeholders’ Summit in Cebu City on Tuesday, February 10.
Tagging the sea creatures as “parasites”, Garcia said the marine animals are eating fish that are supposed to be for human consumption, as reported by RachFeed.
Garcia, who is the brother of former Cebu governor Gwen Garcia, stressed that he wants to “regulate and not eradicate” the population of fish. Pointing out that dolphins, sharks and whales consume two tons of fish a day, Garcia said that the marine creatures are competing with fishermen in their town.
Marine Creatures Not to be Blamed
According to a report by Rappler, fishermen are only able to get 2 kilograms of fish in a day. A disappointing figure compared to the 5 kilograms of fish fishermen were able to catch in the 1970’s.
Meanwhile, Tañon Strait expert Dr Lem Aragones and some environmental experts think that the marine creatures are not the culprit for the declining fish catch. Aragones blamed the situation to overfishing and pollution.
Furthermore, World Wildlife Fun, a conservation organisation, said marine creatures like whales play an important role in balancing the marine environment. Studies have also claimed that protection of these marine species result to healthier and more abundant seas.
However, Garcia thinks these are only theories. He even mentioned the whale and dolphin hunting situation in Japan.
A 2014 report by the CNN revealed that Wakayama prefectural government allows local fishermen in Taiji town to hunt about 2,000 dolphins and porpoises. The report also divulged that most of the caught dolphins are allegedly slaughtered for their meat. Other dolphins were sold alive for the purpose of showcasing them in aquariums and marine exhibits around the world.
Garcia: “Tourism Not Only Relies on Sharks and Dolphins”
A popular tourist attraction in Cebu and Boho, dolphin and whale watching is an activity that has contributed a lot to the rising tourism industry of the two provinces.
Garcia, on the other hand, believes that their tourism industry does not solely rely on the marine creatures.

Parasite? Eating fish that are supposed to be for human consumption? Seriously. I don’t get why Cebu people voted for an ignorant man like you. For all I know those marine life has every right to that ocean. WE are the parasite. I booked a flight on october ’15 to cebu bc i really want to experience snorkeling with the gentle giants. And i was so sad hearing this news. Hopefully his plans will not be a success on his part.
