A 50-year-old woman claimed she hasn’t smiled for the last 40 years in order to avoid wrinkles, according to a report by Mail Online.
Tess Christian, who trained herself to control her facial muscles, said her unique anti-ageing technique is less expensive than beauty creams and not artificial like Botox.
“Everyone asks if I’ve had Botox, but I haven’t, and I know that it’s thanks to the fact I haven’t laughed or smiled since I was a teenager. My dedication has paid off, I don’t have a single line on my face, ” she said.
Christian’s decision not to smile started when she was still studying at a Catholic school where nuns instructed children not to smile.
Aside from smiling, Christian avoids other facial movements like laughing and frowning to maintain her youthful looks. Even when she gave birth to her daughter, Christian still didn’t feel the need to smile.
Some Hollywood actresses also do Christian’s beauty trick. In fact, reality star Kim Kardashian revealed that she attempts not to smile or laugh to avoid wrinkles.
Dr. Nick Lowe, a dermatologist, explained that a person won’t get as many lines when they train themselves to reduce facial expressions. Such process is similar to the rationale behind Botox wherein muscle activity is reduced.
Meanwhile, a London-based psychologist believes smiling is essential to our mental health. Amanda Hills explained that endorphins are released when a person smiles.
“Not only that, but the more you do it the happier you feel, because you are telling the neural pathways in your brain you are happy — even if you aren’t,” she said.
