In order to do this, a team of filmmakers and explorers headed by Sam Cossman have captured some incredible close-up footage, in a way that’s never been done before, of a volcano inside Marum Crater on Ambrym Island in Vanuatu to 3D map its 7.5-mile-wide (12-kilometer) caldera and the spectacular lava lake at its core.
According to the Crossman on the video, which appears on the National Geographic website,”It’s a glimpse into the center of the Earth. It’s like listening to the heartbeat of the planet.”
To avoid the most-likely-fatal encounter, the filmmakers used drones fitted with GoPro cameras and devices to keep the video stable no matter how much they shook. The drones took thousands of photographs around the top of the crater, according to the video, and the team used specialized software to process these image and render a “first of its kind 3D model of the volcano from the inside.” However, not all of the drones survived the expedition. “We lost to the harsh environment.”
Marum crater is a 7.5-mile-wide caldera in Ambrym, a volcanic island in the archipelago of Vanuatu, with poisonous chlorine and sulfur gases that rise from its vent. The large volcanic crater made news last September when a daredevil donned a protective suit and rappelled as close as he could to the churning lake of lava.
