A man from Gujarat in Western India is willing to sell his kidney just to fund the medical treatment of his three morbidly obese children.
His kids, 5-year old Yogita Rameshbhai Nandwana who weighs 34 kg, 3-year-old Anisha who weighs 48kg, and 18-month-old Harsh who weighs 15kg, are probably among the heaviest toddlers in the world.
Everyday, sisters Anisha and Yogita consume eight pieces of Indian bread, three bowls of broth, 2kg of rice, five packets of biscuits, six packets of crisps, one dozen bananas, and one liter of milk. Meanwhile, Harsh drinks eight glasses of milk daily.
Despite having a menial job and earning only Rs 3000 or roughly $48 a month, Rameshbhai spends Rs 10,000 or $160 for his kids’ food.
“I cannot leave them starving. If I don’t have the money, I borrow it from my brothers and friends but I make sure I feed my children when they need,” he told The Mirror.
Meanwhile, Rameshbhai’s wife Pragna Ben is almost always in the kitchen since she needs to cook for her constantly hungry children.
“They demand food all the time and cry and scream if they’re not fed. I am always in the kitchen cooking for them.”
Seeking Doctor’s Help
Aside from the three kids, the couple has a 6-year-old daughter named Bhavika, who weighs normally at 16kg.
But it was only after their son Harsh gained too much weight after birth that the couple realized that their children could be suffering from a disorder.
They consulted many doctors but ended up getting referred to specialists in much bigger hospitals. This is something that they can’t afford.
For the past three years, Rameshbhai has already spent Rs 50,000 or $802 for his children’s medical treatment. However, their condition has not improved.
With their health condition, the children are unable to move on their own. In fact, they can’t even go to school.
“They cannot walk; they cannot do anything on their own. Selling my kidney is a desperate measure but I’m now desperate to get the right help for my children,” said Rameshbhai.
Some local doctors including Dr. Akshay Mandavi of Mandavia Children Hospital believe that the children are suffering from Prader–Willi syndrome, a rare genetic condition that sometimes leads to chronic feeling of hunger leading to life-threatening obesity.
