Many studies have shown that physical punishment including spanking, hitting and other means of causing pain can lead to increased aggression, antisocial behavior, physical injury and mental health problems for children.
A Baltimore mother who slapped and berated his son on public made an interview in CBS News last Tuesday and said that she had a mental blocked during that time she knew about the riot his son is involved. She even explained the reason why she slapped and berated her son in front of public.
According to the previous post of The Dailypedia, the riot started and Toya Graham’s son was there so she being a mom, slapped and berated his son in public.
Toya Graham slapped her son from a crowd of rioters of teenagers that were setting fire to cars and throwing stones at police in Baltimore on Monday evening. Her action of slapping his son became viral was a bit negative on social media.
Because of her action, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said parents should “take control of your kids.” Batts blamed last night’s violence on the city’s teens who he claimed “thought it was cute to throw cinder blocks at police.”
She said in an interview that she wanted his son to be alive and not to be like Freddie Gray.
That’s my only son and at the end of the day, I don’t want him to be a Freddie Gray, she said.
She said that what she did was only proof that she loves her son. But to some irony, her son was mad at her, her son said that whenever he saw his mom, the tendency is run away. Graham, a single mother of six children, has a reputation for being a no-nonsense mother, she told the network, and when her son saw her walking towards him, he knew what he had coming.
Physical punishment can work momentarily to stop problematic behavior because children are afraid of being hit, but it doesn’t work in the long term and can make children more aggressive, the American Psychological Association shares.
She posted this in her Facebook account and got a lot of commendations.

However, Anderson Cooper stated on his Twitter that Toya Graham saw his son with bricks before she slapped him.
According to the reports, some commended this mom for possibly saving her son’s life and keeping him out of harm’s way. Parents won’t harm their kids unless they need to do so.
Netizens said that her son should appreciate his mom and follow her.
If we really want to protect our children from the police we can’t beat them into submission out of fear, we must continue pushing for substantive changes in the justice system; increased economic opportunities for our neighborhoods; better schools; and equal and fair protection under the law. Unless that happens we’ll keep seeing more uprisings across the country, Graham said.
At the end of interview, the bottomline is she doesn’t want her son to die and to be like Freddie Gray. She wants a better future for his son.
