Bullying claims another life; Teenage cheerleader commits suicide

Bullying has been a problem to the society for quite sometime.  We’ve heard stories related to bullying: some would keep mum about it and accept being bullied, some fight back and bring the case to the authorities, and some who couldn’t bear it just end up taking their lives to make it stop.

This was the case of 12-year old Amber Rose Caudel, a high school cheerleader in Everett, Washington who hanged herself to death last Thursday after school bullies kept calling her names and even spat on her.

Getting to know Amber

According to her father, Scott Caudel, Amber was a happy child from the outside, but was broken in the inside.”She wanted to be popular..one of those kids that everybody wanted to be with. It doesn’t matter if you knock their books out of their hand, or give them a dirty look or call them a name, it hurts.”

Lexy Greenwood, a family friend of the Caudel’s described Amber as, “..an affectionate girl who enjoyed cheerleading for her school and had so much love to give to anybody that she met.”

Amber’s dilemma

Amber’s plight apparently started when her teachers told her that unless she gets higher marks, she would repeat 7th grade.  She then got bullied in person and even online, and was tagged a geek, a sl**, a wh***, in which her older sister, Kathleen Toscano, said, “A 12-yr. old child that’s  never been with somebody is not a sl** or wh***“. Mr Caudel said he has reported the bullying to the school twice, and Amber’s classmates said they have alerted the teachers about her talking of suicide.  The school district said they support a zero tolerance attitude toward bullying. Investigation is ongoing.

A walk-out to honor Amber and raise awareness of bullying

Evergreen students, on Monday, walked out of the school (wearing yellow clothing) to honor Amber, and at the same time raise awareness of bullying. This is not the first time that a student committing suicide because of bullying was reported.

Bullying has to stop! It has since taken its toll claiming lives of bully victims and continuously causing problems to our society.  Let us all be responsible and teach our children, or remind our friends and loved ones, to never bully anyone.  We’ll never know what can happen to them when we do.
