Boracay has been a popular destination for a lot of tourists. With its white sand and fine beaches, it is a perfect venue for events and conventions. However, this island paradise has suffered in part because of its popularity.
Earlier this year, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Environmental Management Bureau in Western Visayas reported high levels of coliform bacteria in a drainage outlet that has already exceeded safety standards.
Just recently, an Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meet was held in Boracay. Good thing, a Filipino invention called the “Eco-Sep” (ecologically friendly septic) was able to save the island from an ecological not to mention embarrassing disaster. Eco-sep not only controls the smell, but also removes the presence of coliform bacteria.
Eco-sep was invented by Dr. Merlinda Palencia of Adamson University. Her research was funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) agency Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).
Eco-sep is is self-sustaining and portable/movable waste water treatment system that uses an innovative combination of bio-stimulation and filtration, and is low-cost.
Another highlight of Eco-sep is its portability which can be used in disaster areas and different types of residences like condominium and hotels, and other institutions.
On a final note, Executive Director Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevara of PCIEERD stated that for the hotels being treated for their waste water, DOST has provided a stock of concoction enough to last until the end of May 2015.
