A recent article from the Daily Media Buzz about a Chinese mother who stabbed her baby 90 times has been circulating on social media. The article, which was published on May 13, 2015, stated that the mother stabbed her baby after she was bit by the latter while breastfeeding. But is there any truth about it?
In July 2013, articles from the Daily Mail, the International Business Times, New York Daily News and Mirror told of an eight-month old baby who was stabbed by his mother. According to those articles, the baby was stabbed 90 times with a pair of scissors and had to go undergo 100 stitches. These articles also said that the mother stabbed the baby because the latter apparently bit his mother while breastfeeding. The Daily Mail and Mirror reports claimed the mother is not suffering from any mental illness. However, according to International Business Times and New York Daily News, the mother still needs to undergo tests in order to confirm if the mother is mentally ill. The New York Daily News also said that the baby was stabbed 90 times in the face.
We found the original article which was published in Chinese by Epoch Times. In the original article, it was not determined what sharp object was used to stab the baby which resulted in 90 multiple wounds in different parts of his body. However, it is true that the baby had to undergo 100 stitches. The baby was found on July 6, 2013 by one of his uncles. Apparently, the mother was angry for some reason (which they assume because the baby bit his mother’s breast during feeding) prompting her to stab her own son. Fortunately, also according to the original article, the doctors said that the baby may not develop scars since his skin tissues are still young.

Is the mother mentally ill?
According to the original article, the mother seemed sane because she was able to take care of her first two children. However, neighbors are saying that the mother, based on their observation, is definitely suffering from mental problems. She also lost her husband eight months before the incident.
So is it there any truth about the Chinese mother who stabbed her baby 90 times? Unfortunately, yes. However, the news was almost two years ago, and not recent as the latest article claims.
