Will Microsoft’s How-Old.net Tool Use Your Photos for Ads?

Thousands of Internet users including you have probably used Microsoft’s viral age-guessing tool. The free app which allows users to guess a person’s age or gender based on an individual’s photo has indeed taken the Internet by storm as Facebook, Twitter, and other social media users help spread its funny results.

However, a Twitter user noticed something fishy in the tool’s fine print. According to Twitter user @Waldo, Microsoft may potentially use the photos you share or store in the tool in future advertisements by the company or in other websites as reported by Fast Company.

Check out the fine print from the Terms of Service for Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform.

If this Twitter user’s interpretation of the clause is actually right, then we might as well brace ourselves for the consequences of using this tool.

Microsoft Issues Statement

Meanwhile, a Microsoft spokesperson has addressed the issue and claimed that the tool does not store or share photos and information.

We wanted to let you know that the http://how-old.net does not store or share pictures or personally identifiable information (PII). The Terms of Service are accurate and like those of other companies. Developers get to choose how their apps work. The developers of How-old.net chose not to store or share photos for this app,” he told Fast Company.

Now that the tool’s users are on the safe side, we’re hoping that this should serve as a reminder to everyone: Read before you click.
