One of the major issues in the Philippines is when a government official takes advantage of his position to break the rules.
In a photo posted by netizen J. Reyes on Facebook, a vehicle allegedly owned by a public official (plate no. 8 for “Congressman”) is obviously breaking the traffic rules. Clearly, this vehicle is trying to “overtake” by making his own counterflow lane, flashing its hazard lights as if it were an emergency.
Angry netizens especially drivers commented on the post, saying this is one reason why the country can not make any progress. How could it when the lawmakers themselves don’t even follow the rules they created?
Reyes said that it appeared that an old woman and a young lady were the ones in the car, so it was unlikely the car was on official business. Some netizens gave sarcastic speculations as to why the passengers were in a hurry, like someone needed to use a bathroom ASAP or they were late for Congress.
Some suggested that other than bearing the number 8 on the license plate of a Congressman’s (or any specific public official’s) vehicle, it should also indicate the district they represent.
Read some of the comments below:
A. Rivera: “Me napansin ako… yan dapat ang plaka me petsa para mahiya naman ung umaabuso… sana meron ding district para malaman kung sino.”
(I noticed something, The plate should have a date to prevent officials from abusing their power. It should also bear the district to know who the Representative is.)
A. P. Rivera: “Dapat nakalagay sa plaka yang distrito nyan ng mapahiya naman ng konti. yan ang tunay na Lawmaker lawbreaker”
(The plate should bear the district so the official should be a bit ashamed. A real Lawmaker lawbreaker.)
G. Lim: “That’s why when we vote [for] our next Congressman, make sure to vote the one who will put the nation’s interest over their own.”
L. Van Reyla: “The number 8 plate on your vehicle does not give you a right to be stupid!”
R. S. Valencia: “Tuwid na daan talaga as in tuloy tuloy. Incumbent House Member ang may ari. Nakakahiya ka Sir!”
[Really a straight path (in reference to President Noynoy Aquino’s mantra of having a non-corrupt government). Incumbent House Member owns the vehicle. You’re an embarrassment, Sir!)
