How do you get back at people who treat you like you don’t have the right to exist because to them you are an “eyesore”?
For bullied victim Kyemah McEntyre, she retaliated fabulously – by slaying their prom night with the best hand-sewn afro-centric gown she designed.
The 18-year-old New Jersey native said that she sketched the dress and asked a local seamstress from Markell’s Closet to create it for her.
Her date wore a black suit with red bowtie and handkerchief that complemented the whole ensemble.
Sporting a richly-colored, fashionable gown with a plunging neckline and floor-length balloon skirt plus the confidence she displayed, she was crowned as the prom queen.
Kyemah posted her photos on Instagram expressing her purpose behind the design.
“I’m Kyemah McEntyre, I am 18 years old and I am undoubtedly of African Descent. As an artist I have a completely different point of view compared to most individuals. I am extremely analytical and observant.”
She spoke up about bullies who try to put other people down through insults and harsh words.
The artist also encouraged everyone to accept and embrace themselves for who they are.
“Throughout the world, we have people who do not notice each other’s essence and humanity,” she explained adding that we hold ourselves back by letting assumptions and stereotypes cloud our mind which eventually affects how we see things. “We let these negative ideas get the best of us.”
At the end of her post, she encouraged everyone to accept and embrace their individuality, saying, “Don’t let anyone define you. Beautiful things happen when you take pride in yourself.”
In a separate post, she uploaded another photo of her rocking the dress with the caption, “This is for always being labeled as ‘ugly’ or ‘angry’. Thank God, stereotypes are just opinions.”
The senior student, who is now an internet sensation-slash-inspiration, plans to study at Parson’s School of Design later this year.
Today, Kyemah is busy promoting her designs in her store (named KyesMind) on Etsy.
