LOOK: New marine species discovered in the Philippines

2. A live, speckled sea slug

A specimen of the sea slug—Chelidonura alexisi—was also found in the Verde Island Passage. Initially discovered during the Academy’s 2011 exploration, this live, speckled sea slug will provide important information to the official species description.

It’s thrilling to return to such an incredibly diverse region year after year. Whether we’re finding new species or adding to our understanding of previously known creatures and habitats, these expeditions help us pinpoint how and where to focus protection efforts.
