A British couple who have been living together for 27 years finally tied the knot on June 13, 2015. George Kirby and Doreen Luckie are now the oldest couple to get married at the ages of 103 and 91, respectively.
According to Mirror, George finally popped the question on Valentine’s Day this year. They started being in a domestic partnership in 1988 and lived at the Langham Hotel in Eastbourne, East Sussex. The Langham Hotel is being run by Neil, George’s eldest son.
How the couple started their road to forever
The couple met each other when they joined an organization that helps elderly people find friends. George was divorced at that time and Doreen was a widow.
Doreen said, “He used to come to my house. We got on straight away. He liked the roses in my front garden. He was a real smooth talker.”
The couple then decided to shack up in 1990.
“Long ago we adopted Doreen as our mum, and we’re all delighted that she’s now a Kirby,” Neil said.
A happy ending and a promising beginning
It took almost three decades before George and Doreen decided to make their commitment official. George just asked Doreen if she wanted to be married to him.
“We were having dinner and I asked Doreen if she wanted to be married to me for a short time. I was so happy that she said ‘yes.'”
When George turned 103, the couple finally sealed the deal and they also now hold the record for the oldest couple to get married.
