1. Tragedy of Omayra Sanchez by Frank Fourier (1985)
Omayra Sanchez was a 13-year old victim of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano eruption on November 13, 1985 in Armero, Colombia. The disaster caused massive lahar flows which killed nearly 25,000. She was trapped for three days in water, concrete, and other debris before she died.
Sanchez became internationally famous through a photograph of her taken by the photojournalist Frank Fournier shortly before she died. When published worldwide it generated considerable controversy; it was later designated the World Press Photo of the Year for 1985.
