9. War Underfoot by Carolyn Cole (2004)
Taken by another Pulitzer Prize winner Carolyn Cole, this photo features bullet casings carpeting a street in Monrovia, the capital city of the West African country of Liberia, at the heart of the battlefield between government and rebel soldiers.
The war is known as the Siege of Monrovia, which occurred from July 18 to August 14, 2003. It was a major military confrontation between the Armed Forces of Liberia and Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy rebels during the Second Liberian Civil War. The shelling of the city resulted in the deaths of some 1,000 civilians.
