Do you remember the German man who gave his ex-wife literally half of everything they owned after their divorce? Turns out that it was all a promotional gimmick for a German website that helps people find lawyers for family/relationship problems.
The man, who calls himself der.juli on Ebay, posted cut items and put them on sale. The items included a sofa, a bed, a bike, a teddybear, a bicycle, a motorbike helmet, a wireless landline phone, a Samsung TV set, an iPhone 5 and an Apple Macbook Pro. Even an REM record, DVD of German late night comedy, a mailbox, and chairs were not spared.
The posted video showing the man cutting his possessions in half attracted 5.6 million views and counting.
Here’s the translated version of the real story behind the “shared pain” that came from German language online magazine Suddeutsche Zeitung:
“Two days later is now clear: None of this was real. There is no Martin G., no Laura and no work colleagues. In truth, it is a guerrilla marketing campaign of the German Lawyers’ information, a consumer-law portal of the German Bar Association. On Saturday, the organization expressed its commitment.
The aim was to attract more people into German law firms, so that they themselves – be advised of a possible divorce and protect legally – of course for a fee.”
It’s not unheard of for a divorce/settlement goes to such extremes. Back in 2008, a Cambodian man literally divided his house in two after putting an end to 40 years of marriage. This seems to be the former’s inspiration of cutting everything in half.
