Vice President Jejomar Binay officially launched the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), his political party for his presidential bid in 2016, on Wednesday, July 1.
Political allies and supporters gathered at the Makati Coliseum at around 2:30 p.m. to show their support for Binay. Among those who attended were Sen. JV Ejercito, Sen. Gregorio Honasan, Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao, and former Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay. Former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada, one of the pillars of the political party, was a no-show at the event.
Minutes after the program started, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay showed up at the event. Earlier today, the younger Binay vacated his post after being forced to step down based on a suspension order by the Ombudsman.
VP Binay’s Speech Slams Aquino Administration
In his speech, Binay pointed out the shortcomings of the Aquino administration for the past five years.
“Sa loob ng limang taon, napakarami pa rin ang walang trabaho, mga nagugutom, at mga maysakit na walang magamutan. Mga kabataang hindi mapag-aral ng kanilang pamilya. Talamak na krimen at iligal na droga sa mga komunidad. Laganap pa rinang kahirapan,” Binay stressed.
(In the past five years, there are many Filipinos who are jobless, hungry, and sick. There are youth who can’t afford to go to school. Crime and illegal drugs are still rampant in our society. Poverty is still prevalent.)
“Kaya ba ang tanong ng bayan: nasaan ang gobyerno?” he added.
(The nation is asking, where is the government?)
Future Plans
The aspiring Presidential candidate took the opportunity to discuss his future plans should he assume Presidency next year. Among his basic programs are social inclusion/improvement of basic services, economic dynamism, and effective and caring governance.
According to Binay, his administration aims to achieve the following:
- Strengthen the five biggest sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, export, and business process outsourcing in order to provide jobs
- Provide free and quality basic education as well as subsidized higher education
- Improve public hospitals and provide basic health care for all medical services
- Strengthen the economy to provide jobs and fund government services
- Improve facilities such as the airport and the MRT
- Offer affordable electricity rates
