7. The Vomit-Drinking Doctor
In an attempt to prove that yellow fever was not contagious, Stubbins Ffirth, a trainee doctor, drank a “fresh black vomit” of a patient. He even smeared himself with yellow-fever-tainted saliva, blood, sweat, and urine. Although Ffirth’s methodology seems silly, his hypothesis was proven in his 1804 thesis.
