Aquarium therapy: how a fish tank can cure stress

Stress. We’ve all experienced it. It affects each one of us in different ways. We get tense when the unexpected happens: a work presentation that needs to be done ASAP, a family emergency, an uncomfortable scenario at school to name a few. This level of anxiety can lead to emotional and physical problems when not dealt with properly.

So how do you handle a stressful life? Get an aquarium.

Believe it or not, keeping a fish tank at home can help alleviate stress, lower blood pressure, and calm the mind. A study by Scientists at the National Marine Aquarium showed how people were affected physiologically just by looking at an aquarium. As more fish were added, their heart rates and blood pressure dropped, resulting in better moods.

Lead researcher Deborah Cracknell said that even looking at a normal tank with just the light and the movement of the artificial seaweed was quite relaxing for people. “But when we added fish, it definitely did make a difference,” she added.

To further explain, the tropical colors of the fishes prove to be visually hypnotic. Second, the sound of the running water is like music that soothes the busy mind. No wonder we feel rested when we are on the beach!

Having an aquarium is like bringing nature into our home. It not only beautifies our home, it’s also a good to calm down an agitated and stressed mind.
