Too much sitting every day increases risk for women to develop cancer.
That is the findings of a long-term research conducted by the American Cancer Society. It says that women who spend 6 hours or more of free time sitting per day have a 10% greater risk of developing cancer than women who spend less than 3 hours of free time sitting daily.
The study also propose that these women who spend too much sitting are more likely to develop certain types of cancer like multiple myeloma, ovarian cancer, and invasive breast cancer. However too much sitting does not raise cancer risk to most men in the study.
The study is composed of a total 77,462 women and 69,260 men enrolled in the American Cancer SocietyCancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort. Data were collected, compared and analyzed for an average of 15.8 years for women and men were followed for an average of 13.2 years. They compared how many hours participants reported sitting in their leisure time to their risk of developing cancer.
There was no recorded cancer profile when the study started. They started comparing data between 1992 and 2009, when a total of 12,236 women and 18,555 men were diagnosed with cancer. These are the finding for women —- sitting 6 hours or more a day during free time links to 65% greater risk for multiple myeloma, 43% greater risk for ovarian cancer, 10% greater risk for invasive breast cancer, and 10% greater risk for any cancer at all. This is in comparison with women who sat less than 3 hours a day during their free time.
Interestingly, the increase in risk stayed the same after adjusting a couple of factors that may affect the studies like amount of physical activity, BMI, age, and other factors. The same pattern did not apply to most men subjects but holds true for obese men.
With these findings, the American Cancer Society suggests men and women to get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity per week. It’s okay to combine both moderate and intensity activities spread out within the week. It is highly encouraged to avoid too much sitting when possible.
It’s like saying, stand up whenever you have the chance. Take advantage of it. Nobody wants to to have cancer, right?
