Shelly Cawley fell into a coma during an emergency cesarean section. Baby Rylan was doing great, but staff at the hospital struggled to keep Shelly alive, with many believing she might not last through their shift.
“She had a lot of fluid in her lungs, they were having trouble getting oxygen to her brain, they were having trouble with her blood pressure up… And it just seemed as if she was done fighting,” said Jeremy Cawley, Shelly’s husband.
It certainly was difficult for him to watch his wife lying with various tubes and machines connected to her body while he was also enjoying their newborn baby. It was also quite heartbreaking to watch Shelly slip away as each hour passed.
Out of the blue, nurse Ashley Manus suggested that they place baby Rylan by Shelly’s side, in hopes that she would feel the baby’s presence and find a reason to fight for her life. It was a bittersweet moment as the tiny child peacefully went to sleep as soon as she was placed by her mother’s side.
Jeremy and the nurses did their best to make Rylan cry so that Shelly could hear her, somehow. They tried everything from tickling her toes to pinching her body until the baby let out a cry of frustration for having been unceremoniously awakened.
The sharp cries must have penetrated Shelly’s consciousness because her vital signs suddenly shot up and she began to move. Although it would take one full week before she fully came out of the coma, there was no doubt in everyone’s mind that Rylan had called back her mom from death’s door.
Today, Rylan continues to be the little angel that she was at birth. She has a sweet disposition and sleeps through the night. Everyone loves her! Who wouldn’t, anyway?
