8. Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea)
This plant is practically the pit of death for insects and many small animals. Mostly found in the United States and Canada, the pitcher plant is the only carnivorous plant which can thrive in cold temperatures.
The plant obtains most of its nutrients through its prey. During the rainy season, the plants collect water in their “pitchers” and during the warm summer months, prey fall into it and drown in the rainwater that collects in the base of each leaf. Bacteria at the base of the pitcher breaks down the prey, making nutrients available to the plant. New pitcher leaves also produce digestive enzymes, but as the individual leaves grow older into their second year, digestion of prey material is aided by the community of bacteria that live within the pitchers.
