5. Lymphatic Filariasis or Elephantiasis
Lymphatic filariasis is a parasitic infection that can result in an altered lymphatic system and the abnormal enlargement of body parts, causing pain, severe disability, and social stigma. Body parts that are most affected are usually the limbs and the external genitals. Infection occurs when filarial parasites are transmitted to humans through mosquitoes. It is usually acquired in childhood, causing hidden damage to the lymphatic system. Over 120 million people are infected, with about 40 million disfigured and incapacitated by the disease.
Elephantiasis can be eliminated by stopping the spread of infection through preventive chemotherapy with single doses of two medicines for persons living in areas where the infection is present.
