6. Hypertrichosis or “Werewolf Syndrome”
This medical condition most likely inspired the werewolf myth. Hypertrichosis is a very rare condition, with fewer than 100 cases documented worldwide. The two distinct types of hypertrichosis are generalized hypertrichosis (which occurs over the entire body) and localized hypertrichosis (which is restricted to a certain area). Hypertrichosis can be either congenital (present at birth) or acquired later in life.
There is no cure for any congenital forms of hypertrichosis. For the acquired forms, treatment is based on attempting to address the underlying cause. All hypertrichosis, congenital or acquired, however, can be reduced through hair removal.
