A woman from Anhui in eastern China has just learned that she has had a two-inch needle lodged in her brain for at least 46 years, according to a report by People’s Daily Online.
The 48-year-old woman, who is known by her surname Liu, had suffered from regular headaches for more than four decades. Although Liu often visited doctors to find out the cause of her pain, it wasn’t until she went to Huaibei Miners General Hospital that she discovered the real reason behind her headaches.
A CT scan showed that a 1.8-inch-long needle was found near the top of her skull. Doctors suspect that the needle was injected into her head when she was still an infant.
Liu’s daughter, who accompanied her during checkups, told Anhui News: “Doctors said the nail (needle) was likely to have been inserted into my mother’s head before she was 18 months old. Due to the fact that her brain had not been fully developed at the time, the nail did not affect my mother’s growth.”
Despite the high level of risk, Liu is set to undergo an open-brain surgery to remove the needle as the sharp object may potentially cause epileptic seizures and other serious illnesses.
