If you have a preference for bitter-tasting foods and drinks such as black coffee, unsweetened cocoa, tonic water, as well as radishes, there’s a possibility that you have psychopathic tendencies.
Psychologists from Innsbruck University in Austria found that individuals with a preference for bitter tastes were more likely to display signs of narcissism, sadism, and Machiavellianism.
The findings of the two separate experiments which involved 1,000 participants suggested that “how much people like bitter-tasting foods and drinks is tied to how dark their personality is.”
In the first experiment, 500 male and female participants were asked to rate how much they liked foods with varying tastes including sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Afterwards, the participants were asked to complete four separate personality questionnaires.
A similar experiment was conducted on 450 participants. The same results were observed in the second experiment.
“General bitter taste preferences emerged as a robust predictor for Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, and everyday sadism,” the researchers revealed in the journal Appetite.
Researchers suggested that individuals with dark personality traits may prefer bitter foods because of the “thrill” they experience from them.
“For people with sadistic traits, eating bitter foods may be compared to a rollercoaster ride, where people enjoy things that induce fear,” study author Christina Sagioglou explained.
