Both the world of politics and show business were surprised to hear about Heart Evangelista-Escudero’s mother Cecile Ongpauco’s decision to support Miriam Defensor-Santiago in her presidential campaign.
Santiago will be running against Senator Grace Poe of the Liberal Party for president in the May 2016 elections along with some other candidates. Poe’s running mate for vice president is Heart’s husband, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, which raised several questions.
Ongpauco was present at Santiago’s presidential bid at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City last Friday, October 23, 2015. When asked why she was there to support Miriam (and not her son-in-law’s running mate or party), Ongpauco simply replied that she and Santiago have been friends for many years, nothing more, nothing less.
Similarly, when asked about his reaction to Ongpauco’s support, Escudero replied, “Friendship and relationships go beyond politics.”
Nonetheless, Escudero is hopeful that they will still get Ongpauco’s support come election day. “While I respect the position now of Heart’s mother, who is admittedly very close to Sen. Miriam, it will not deter me and Heart from trying to convince her to support Sen. Grace until the day of the elections,” the senator added in a text message to a reporter from Manila Bulletin.
Escudero and Evangelista were married earlier this year after a series of events involving Evangelista’s parents and their initial disapproval of the couple’s relationship. Could this be another hiccup in the Escudero-Evangelista love story?
