In the latest tragedy that has swept China, a four-year-old boy became a victim of yet another accident involving escalators.
In the horrifying incident which occurred in the Chinese city of Chongqing last week, a young boy became wedged under an escalator handrail in Hongqiaohegou metro station.
Reports claimed that the boy was playing with the handrail alone when he fell under it. According to local authorities, the boy and his three-year-old sister were left unattended by their mother in the ticketing hall.
The escalator did not stop until a station staff member managed to shut it down after 20 seconds. Unfortunately, it was too late for the boy who later died of severe injuries in a hospital.
The Chongqing Rail Transport Authority quickly issued a statement on its Weibo account.
“We are deeply regretful and heartbroken over this case! We also would like to remind all passengers to look after their young children and old folks when travelling, be more alert, and avoid similar accidents!”
Moreover, it revealed that they had offered assistance to the family of the victim and is currently conducting an investigation on the incident.
Photos of the fatal escalator accident spread like wildfire on several Chinese social media sites. Several netizens expressed their anger over the poor safety regulations that have led to a string of deadly accidents.
Early this year, a 31-year-old Chinese mom named Xiang Liujuan died after the metal panel of the escalator she was riding collapsed. Luckily, Xiang was able to bring her son to safety just before the panel gave way.
A 30-second video of the terrifying incident became viral online.
