If you think handsome guys seem to have all the luck in this world, this study will prove that the world is indeed fair.
A study conducted by researchers from University College London and the University of Maryland claims that attractive dudes may find it harder to land a job in a highly competitive work environment. Their findings suggest that they may be subconsciously perceived as threats by people in charge of hiring.
Previous studies showed that good-looking men make more money, are more successful in closing big deals, and are viewed as more competent than their less-attractive counterparts. Moreover, they tend to have better work outcomes in terms of salaries, promotions, and job offers. Of course, they also have a much easier time finding a partner.
According to study author Marko Pitesa, if the person in charge of the hiring feels insecure, he or she may, without intention or knowledge, discriminate against these hot dudes.
In the study which was divided into four related experiments, participants were asked to hire by choosing between the photos of attractive and unattractive candidates. Their attractiveness was determined based on a previous study.
The results showed that attractive men performed well in a team environment, while unattractive men were more preferred in a competitive environment.
“In situations where there are subtle or less subtle cues of competition among colleagues, then the fact that attractive men are seen as more competent is going to create a disadvantage for attractive men,” Pitesa told Fusion.
